I'm 60+ years old, enjoy photography, letter writing and thinking. Being the Steward of our garden allows me to stay in touch with our Mother, take some pretty nice pictures and write some letters. When I can I live gently. For more than thirty years Multiple Sclerosis has been my intimate friend.

My New World Order

Multiple Sclerosis is never boring.  The symptoms can stay the same forever or change overnight. Mine was the consistent variety. A slow but steady decline.

About a year ago things changed.

My eyes started to get worse. Balance became a problem. Physical endurance tanked. About a month ago my eyes came back. But my bladder and bowels became problematic. Three days ago I began needing hourly naps.

I have no idea what’s next. I do know that I shall continue my shots and thoughts. Possibly with less frequency but continue they shall.

What is the one thing, O Gotama, whose killing you approve?

Poisoned root?

Having slain anger, one sleeps soundly; having slain anger, one does not sorrow; the killing of anger, with its poisoned root and honeyed tip: This is the killing the nobles ones praise, for having slain that, one does not sorrow.

Does this make sense to you? It does to me.

Thich Nhat Hanh, Jesus, spiritual practice, looking deeply

Looking Deeply

And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened?

Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?

When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve.

And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven.

And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?

They didn’t understand because they didn’t look deeply. They wouldn’t or couldn’t look deeply to find the reality that Jesus had found. They weren’t bad, stupid or lazy but they were trapped. They could only understand what their culture allowed them to. And you’re trapped too. Thankfully there’s a way out of the trap. Looking Deeply.

Looking Deeply allows you to see what is around and within you.

Can you see the caterpillar in the butterfly? How about the leaves the caterpillar ate. Or the soil the plant grew in, that grew the leaves, that fed the caterpillar, that was the butterfly? All can be seen within the butterfly.

This is how you you get out of the trap. You train yourself to see and hear what really is and to remember what you already know.

Regrettably those who controlled the early Christians decided that the spiritual practice of Jesus was not going to be passed down. However the spiritual practice of Thich Nhat Hanh will work for a Christian as well as a Buddhist.

The Old Man’s Hope

There is way too much pain and way too little satisfaction in our world. I believe that by sharing Wisdom and Beauty that the pain will be lessened and that my satisfaction will increase. A good deal all around.
