‘Practicing the First Noble Truth, we recognize our suffering and call it by its name — depression, anxiety, fear, or insecurity.’
If you are living you are suffering. When was the last time you had a truly happy day. I’m betting you can’t remember. I know I can’t. This is not to say that everything is suffering and that there is no happiness. But it is a solid Rock of Gibraltar fact that there is more suffering than happiness in our lives.
How many people do you know that can make it one month, one week or even one day without ingesting some serious mood altering substances? I’m not talking about hard drugs. I’m talking about a little wine, maybe some whisky, tobacco or the ubiquitous caffeine. I’d sure have trouble getting through the day without the mood enhancement caffeine gives me.
Which brings me to the point of this epistle. Do you need to suffer? The answer is no you don’t. But it will take hard work for you to end your dissatisfaction. First and perhaps most crucial is to recognize your suffering and face it. Once you have done that you can move on. There are four truths to understand. Eight areas in your life that need work. Teachings to study and test. Your mind needs training as does your body. And best to trust me here… the list and the effort goes on and on.
The good news is that it works. From the very beginning your suffering will lessen. All you have to do is take the first step along your path. You can take this step in any faith or without any faith. It’s your choice.
