Without Water Everything Dies

No Water = No Life

March 31, 2016

Hi Luv et alii,
Water is becoming scarcer in this part of the world. The town below us has daily shortages. The major city below them also has constant shortages.

Because we are nearer the start of the system we have no shortage yet though our pressure is dropping as more families tap into the system.

Next week we start our own reservoir system. We will be collecting rain water from three roofs. In time there will be a three month supply of water for the animals and garden plus two weeks for our house use.

Three months because that is 50% longer than the longest dry season so far, two weeks because we have never lost potable water for more than three days.

Hopefully within a year we will have it all in place.

Take care, be prepared,

Tomorrow I Will Shoot Something Else ~ Promise

Quite the feeding apparatus!

I really will go shoot something else tomorrow. But these wee beasties are just at the outer edge of my lens capabilities and the challenge is hard to resist.

Take care, accept the challenges,

It’s Beginning To Come Together

Today our poultry and ourselves ate a lot from the garden

Hi Luv et alii,
It isn’t there yet and without more land it will never be totally self sustaining but it is getting better. Today our poultry were fed banana leaves, pechay and coconut from our garden. We had coconut juice, string beans, cucumbers, and pechay if we wanted it.

We are getting less dependent on outside food. This is a good thing.

Next week we start on water reservoir / ponds. They will allow us to raise more poultry, fish, possibly even turtles. We will get compost, eggs, meat, and the pleasures of a more natural habitat.

We don’t have enough land to become fully self sustaining. We do have enough land to move in that direction. So we shall.

Take care, plan for the future

Photography & Life: Practice Makes You Better Not Perfect

March 29, 2016

Hi Luv et alii,
I have gone out about six times and have probably taken 300+ shots of the Hover Flies on the purple tree orchid. Each time I tried a slightly different technique. This shot isn’t perfect but for now it is as good as I can get. Hopefully next time the orchid blooms and flies come to feast I will do better.

Parenting & Photography ~ Don’t Knock Good Luck

March 26, 2016

Hi Luv et alii,
This shot is 20% skill and 80% Luck!

purple tree orchid, wasp imitating fly, good luck
All I did was set the camera, the rest was luck

I have been trying for four days to get a decent shot of these orchids. Today the imitation wasps showed up. As the wind died and the fly froze I clicked. The shot is (if I do say so myself) superb. It is also 80% luck.

If you have as much luck parenting as I do shooting, your child will be somewhere else when his or her friends mess up big time.

Take care, stay lucky,
The Old Man
