|Go ahead tear down the school but first tear down the Culture of Abuse in the community|
Go ahead, tear the school down, build a new one. Won’t do any good. The problem is not to be found within the school building. Nor is it to be found outside the community. The problem that creates this Hell on Earth is found within the community. It is the same problem that is found on every reserve in Canada.
The problem is that for generations there has been a Culture of Abuse which is wrapped up in a Culture of Shame and Fear.
I speak with authority here because I have lived on Reserve and know the situation first hand. And just to be blunt… this was going on long before the colonizers showed up. One could use the favoured term? ‘From time immemorial’.
Certainly the abuse got a leg up with the Residential School System. Future abusers were being created by the school full.
But that is history.
If the future is to change the Culture of Shame and Fear must be broken. Then and only then can the Culture of Abuse be torn down.
The only way for this to happen is for the people who have been abused, raped, beat, and terrorized to speak out. I know this is not easy. I know because I speak as a survivor.
But if you stand together, if you draw from each other the determination and courage that is within each and every one of you it can be done.
Unless this happens the suicides will continue as will the shootings.
Take care, stay safe,
