Middle East Wisdom ~ Strong Counsel Against Associating With Fools, Sluggards, Gossip Mongers, Flatterers And Liars

Like snow in summer and like <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17143A" data-link="(A)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>rain in harvest,
So honor is not <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17143B" data-link="(B)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>fitting for a fool.

 Like a <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17144C" data-link="(C)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>sparrow in its <span class="footnote" data-fn="#fen-NASB-17144a" data-link="[a]” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>[a]flitting, like a swallow in its flying,
So a <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17144D" data-link="(D)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>curse without cause does not <span class="footnote" data-fn="#fen-NASB-17144b" data-link="[b]” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>[b]alight.

 A <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17145E" data-link="(E)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>whip is for the horse, a bridle for the donkey,
And a <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17145F" data-link="(F)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>rod for the back of fools.

 <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17146G" data-link="(G)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>Do not answer a fool according to his folly,
Or you will also be like him.

 <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17147H" data-link="(H)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>Answer a fool as his folly deserves,
That he not be <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17147I" data-link="(I)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>wise in his own eyes.

He cuts off his own feet and drinks violence
Who sends a message by the hand of a fool.

 Like the legs which <span class="footnote" data-fn="#fen-NASB-17149c" data-link="[c]” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>[c]are useless to the lame,
So is a proverb in the mouth of fools.

 Like <span class="footnote" data-fn="#fen-NASB-17150d" data-link="[d]” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>[d]one who binds a stone in a sling,
So is he who gives honor to a fool.

 Like a thorn which <span class="footnote" data-fn="#fen-NASB-17151e" data-link="[e]” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>[e]falls into the hand of a drunkard,
So is a proverb in the mouth of fools.

 <span class="footnote" data-fn="#fen-NASB-17152f" data-link="[f]” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>[f]Like an archer who wounds everyone,
So is he who hires a fool or who hires those who pass by.

 Like <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17153J" data-link="(J)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>a dog that returns to its vomit
Is a fool who <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17153K" data-link="(K)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>repeats <span class="footnote" data-fn="#fen-NASB-17153g" data-link="[g]” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>[g]his folly.

 Do you see a man <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17154L" data-link="(L)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>wise in his own eyes?
<span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17154M" data-link="(M)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>There is more hope for a fool than for him.

 The <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17155N" data-link="(N)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>sluggard says, “There is a lion in the road!
A lion is <span class="footnote" data-fn="#fen-NASB-17155h" data-link="[h]” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>[h]in the open square!”

As the door turns on its hinges,
So does the <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17156O" data-link="(O)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>sluggard on his bed.

 The <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17157P" data-link="(P)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>sluggard buries his hand in the dish;
He is weary of bringing it to his mouth again.

 The sluggard is <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17158Q" data-link="(Q)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>wiser in his own eyes
Than seven men who can <span class="footnote" data-fn="#fen-NASB-17158i" data-link="[i]” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>[i]give a discreet answer.

Like one who takes a dog by the ears
Is he who passes by and <span class="footnote" data-fn="#fen-NASB-17159j" data-link="[j]” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>[j]meddles with <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17159R" data-link="(R)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>strife not belonging to him.

 Like a madman who throws
<span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17160S" data-link="(S)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>Firebrands, arrows and death,
So is the man who <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17161T" data-link="(T)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>
deceives his neighbor,
And says, “<span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17161U" data-link="(U)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>Was I not joking?”

For lack of wood the fire goes out,
And where there is no <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17162V" data-link="(V)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>whisperer, <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17162W" data-link="(W)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>contention quiets down.

Like charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire,
So is a <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17163X" data-link="(X)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>contentious man to kindle strife.

 The <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17164Y" data-link="(Y)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>words of a whisperer are like dainty morsels,
And they go down into the <span class="footnote" data-fn="#fen-NASB-17164k" data-link="[k]” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>[k]innermost parts of the body.

 Like an earthen <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17165Z" data-link="(Z)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>vessel overlaid with silver <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17165AA" data-link="(AA)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>dross
Are burning lips and a wicked heart.

 He who <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17166AB" data-link="(AB)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>hates disguises it with his lips,
But he lays up <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17166AC" data-link="(AC)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>deceit in his <span class="footnote" data-fn="#fen-NASB-17166l" data-link="[l]” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>[l]heart.
When <span class="footnote" data-fn="#fen-NASB-17167m" data-link="[m]” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>[m]
he <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17167AD" data-link="(AD)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>speaks graciously, do not believe him,
For there are seven abominations in his heart.
 Though his hatred <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17168AE" data-link="(AE)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>covers itself with guile,
His wickedness will be <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17168AF" data-link="(AF)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>revealed before the assembly.

 He who <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17169AG" data-link="(AG)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>digs a pit will fall into it,
And he who rolls a stone, it will come back on him.

 A lying tongue hates <span class="footnote" data-fn="#fen-NASB-17170n" data-link="[n]” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>[n]those it crushes,
And a <span class="crossreference" data-cr="#cen-NASB-17170AH" data-link="(AH)” style=”box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 0.625em; line-height: 22px; position: relative; top: 0px; vertical-align: top;”>flattering mouth works ruin.
